Two New Exhibitions at MOLAA - Opening Soon‏

Members Opening Reception*
Saturday, September 22, 2012 | 7:00 - 10:00pm

Lola Álvarez Bravo: The Photography of an Era provides an unprecedented opportunity to examine the career of Lola Álvarez Bravo, one of Mexico’s most important twentieth century photographers. The exhibition not only presents Lola’s well known photographs of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo but also includes a group of recently discovered unpublished photographs from the collection of the Rendón family in Mexico, which are being displayed in public for the first time. Lola Álvarez Bravo worked in commercial photography and taught photography in addition to pursuing her personal artistic interests. Her experimentation with photographic techniques such as photomontage and photo collage and her use of photography to expose the social and political issues of her time, contributed greatly to the development of modern Mexican photography.
The exhibition Lola Álvarez Bravo: The Photography of an Era is organized by the Museo Casa Estudio Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo, Mexico City, in collaboration with the Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes and Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes, Mexico. It is curated by Rachael Arauz and Adriana Zavala with James Oles as curatorial advisor. This exhibition has been made possible through MOLAA’s Exhibition Fund. Additional support is provided by the Robert Gumbiner Foundation, Arts Council for Long Beach and City of Long Beach. Media support is provided by KCRW 89.9FM, L.A. Weekly and Los Angeles Magazine.

During the opening reception only, we will screen a 10 minute silent film by Lola Álvarez Bravo featuring Frida Kahlo. Courtesy of the Center for Creative Photography, Tucson, Arizona which houses the Lola Álvarez Bravo Archive.

Diego Mural
